Keane, Magee highlight MLS Best XI

The MVP front-runners made the star-studded list, which also features the likes of Matt Besler, Tim Cahill and Marco Di Vaio.

Six months after being separated by a trade, Robbie Keane and Mike Magee share the same squad once more.

The former LA Galaxy teammates highlight the 2013 MLS Best XI, which the league unveiled Tuesday. Magee, who nearly carried the Chicago Fire to the postseason following a midseason trade, is one of three forwards, along with fellow MVP finalists Keane and Marco Di Vaio (Montreal Impact).

In midfield, Tim Cahill of the New York Red Bulls and Graham Zusi of Sporting Kansas City are joined by the Portland Timbers duo of Will Johnson and Diego Valeri. Jose Goncalves (New England), Omar Gonzalez (LA) and Matt Besler (Kansas City) comprise the back line in front of goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts (Portland).

Gonzalez made the the cut for the third time, while Ricketts, Besler, Zusi and Keane earned their second nods. The rest of the honorees are first-time selections.

Among the most notable snubs were RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, New York center back Jamison Olave, New England midfielder-forward Diego Fagundez and Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Here is a breakdown of the MLS Best XI:

GK DONOVAN RICKETTS (Portland Timbers): The hulking shot-stopper enjoyed a career renaissance, recording a pristine 0.97 goals against average and leading the league with 14 shutouts.

D JOSE GONCALVES (New England Revolution): The Defender of the Year didn't miss a minute of the regular season while anchoring a Revolution back line that went from 44 goals allowed in 2012 to 38 conceded this year.

D OMAR GONZALEZ (LA Galaxy): Gonzalez enjoyed another steady season for the Galaxy as he balanced newfound U.S. national team obligations, maintaining his form despite playing with a slew of center back partners.

D MATT BESLER (Sporting Kansas City): After winning Defender of the Year honors last season, the ever-composed Besler held together what again was the stingiest defense in MLS (30 goals allowed).

M GRAHAM ZUSI (Sporting Kansas City): The U.S. national team regular provided six goals and eight assists while dictating Kansas City's possession-oriented attack.

M TIM CAHILL (New York Red Bulls): The Australian star led the Red Bulls to the Supporters' Shield in his first full MLS season, notching 11 goals and five assists while also digging in to do plenty of defensive work.

M DIEGO VALERI (Portland Timbers): Valeri pulled the strings in Portland's attack, leading MLS with 13 assists and scoring 10 goals as the Timbers earned the Western Conference's top seed.

M WILL JOHNSON (Portland Timbers): Johnson embraced the captaincy in Portland, winning tackles and distributing smartly in defensive midfield while chipping in nine goals and five assists.

F ROBBIE KEANE (LA Galaxy): Limited to 23 games by international duty and injuries, Keane still compiled 16 goals and 11 assists, with the Galaxy going 12-4-7 with him in the lineup and 3-7-1 when he was absent.

F MARCO DI VAIO (Montreal Impact): The veteran Italian poacher scored 20 goals without taking a single penalty kick, taking Montreal to the playoffs in the club's second MLS season.

F MIKE MAGEE (Chicago Fire): Finished second in MLS with 21 goals — six for LA, 15 for Chicago — while carrying the Fire (2-7-2 when he arrived) to a 12-6-5 record following the trade.
